lyrics

The water's all dried up now,
but it used to flow with ease.
Through channels made of concrete,
'cross fields to feed machines.

And though there's nothing standing,
the rubble still remains.
I'll pick up my guitar, cross that channel
and head out towards the plains.

I'll sing so no one hears me, and play it loud.

The other day I came across
a dirt path deep in the thorns.
I followed it just through the rubble and mud,
and came out on to a lawn.

I could tell that few had been here,
it had seen some time pass by.
The most difficult paths are often not taken
and most folks don't even try.

I'll make my peace with the birdsong, and then sit down.

I wandered back through the hedgerow
and found myself on the track.
Scratches all over my twelve string
and thorns clinging on to my back.

I could've stayed all day in that meadow,
the climate so serene,
but I knew that I had to head back home
and write about what I had seen.

I'll pour myself some coffee, and write it down.
